Postmarked Papeete, Île Tahiti, April 3, 1930. Addressed in his hand to. In French, translated in full. There is a tango tea here, short skirts, and girls with boyish haircuts.But they have preserved the coconut trees! / Warm regards/ to all of you. Who was influenced by Post-Impressionism, revolted against Pointillism and became a leader of the Fauvist school, although his later work moved in other directions. A master in the use of form and color to convey emotion. A lifelong friend and rival of Pablo Picasso, Matisse shared many similarities with his contemporary.
However, he differed from Picasso in that Matisse usually painted from nature. Papeete was, and remains, the capital of French Polynesia. Matisse was visiting Tahiti for the first time in 1930; he painted images from the island repeatedly in later years. Lightly soiled and worn at edges.
