She is considered the fastest woman of all time based on the fact that the world records she set in 1988 for both the 100 m and 200 m still stand. At the time of this note to her uncle she was a senior at Jordan High School in Los Angeles where she set high school records in sprinting and long jump. Her international fame was to be many years in the future.
In 1987 she married Al Joyner , the Olympic triple-jump champion of 1984. He would soon start coaching her full-time in preparation for the upcoming Olympics. At the 1988 Summer Olympics she won four Olympic medals, three gold, and one silver.
In 1989 she announced her retirement due to the responsibilities of many business opportunities outside of sprinting.
