Small envelope with short note and signature of Liang Cheng in English. Liang Cheng was then serving under Chang Yen Hoon. Or Zhang Yinhuan who was minister to the US at the time. Included with this small envelope is a note written by the recipient, Edmund Zalinski, describing his interactions with both Chang Yen Hoon and Liang Cheng and how the small envelope was signed by Liang.The envelope is 2.5" by 4". The writing on the front side is a mixture of Zalinski's writing in pen, stating Mr. Liang/Imperial Chinese Embassy" and below it, in pencil, written by Liang "His Excellency has appointment(s) from 1 till 6. I think you" and then on the reverse "had better call on our [unknown word]" and is then signed "Liang. There are red stamps with the date and time from the Waldorf in between the lines. This is the first photo up. Nothing is inside the envelope. Edmund Zalinski had a long career as a military engineer and inventor, most notably developing the pneumatic dynamite torpedo-gun (called the Zalinski gun). In 1895 or so he made a commercial trip to China and Japan on behalf of the Bethlehem Steel Company.
He saved a lot of signatures and paper items from around that time and gave many to Gertrude Whiting, whose autograph collection this is from. The note he wrote is on a folded over sheet and measures 6.75" by 8.75".
